Our work extends beyond the acquisition and sale of works of art. As a gallery and knowledge centre, Thomas Deprez Fine Arts combines art-historical research, market expertise and a practical understanding of the object itself.
From our gallery, research library and conservation studio in Brussels, we assist private collectors, museums and institutions with the study, acquisition, conservation, presentation and positioning of works of art. Our private viewing room can also be made available to fellow art professionals requiring a discreet and elegant setting to meet clients and present works of art.
Whether concerning a single object or an entire collection, our approach is guided by the same principles that define the gallery: quality, scholarship, discretion and respect for the work and its history. We believe that collections are more than the sum of their contents, and work closely with collectors to develop coherent and meaningful ensembles that reflect their individual interests, histories and ambitions.
Central to our work is a commitment to conserving, studying and championing Belgian artistic heritage,
and to strengthening its recognition both at home and internationally.
Projects are undertaken selectively and considered individually.
Consultancy
Private collections are more than the sum of their contents. They may reflect the history of a family, the vision of an individual collector, or a sustained engagement with an artist, period or field.
We advise private collectors and institutions on the acquisition, sale and management of works of art, with particular expertise in Belgian art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Advice may range from the assessment of an individual work to the development, refinement or dispersal of an entire collection.
Our experience in the international art market and broad network of museums, experts, dealers and auction houses allow us to bring works, collectors and institutions together, or to advise on the most appropriate positioning of important works, including those outside our immediate field of expertise. Discretion, independence and a long-term view remain central to every assignment.
Conservation & Presentation
The way in which a work is conserved and presented is inseparable from the way it is understood and appreciated. Our Brussels studio allows us to examine works closely and enables us to undertake minor treatments with respect for the history and material integrity of each object. Where additional expertise is required, we draw upon a trusted network of specialised conservators and coordinate their intervention on your behalf.
Particular attention is given to presentation and framing. Historical frames and bases are collected, researched, preserved or reconstructed where appropriate, while new presentation solutions can be developed with sensitivity to the period and character of the work. We also advise collectors on display, lighting and presentation within their collections.
We approach every work as if it were our own.
Research & Documentation
Every work of art carries a history that extends beyond what can immediately be seen. Research forms an essential part of our practice, from questions of attribution and dating to provenance, exhibition history, literature and the identification of related works and historical contexts.
What we do for ourselves, we can also do for you.
Drawing on archival sources, historical catalogues, contemporary criticism, photographic records and specialist literature, we reconstruct these histories as fully as the surviving evidence allows. We undertake research for collectors and institutions, resulting where required in documented research dossiers suitable for private, commercial or scholarly use.
Professional photography can form part of this documentation, working with our trusted fine-art photographer to create high-quality photographic records of individual works or entire collections.
Research Library
Our Brussels research library, devoted to Belgian art and its wider European context, has been assembled over many years and continues to grow almost daily. It contains monographs, catalogues raisonnés, exhibition and auction catalogues, periodicals and other historical and specialist publications, including material that is often difficult to locate through public or digital resources.
The library supports the gallery's own research and can be made available by appointment to scholars, curators and collectors pursuing relevant research. An important part of our library is also digital, allowing us to facilitate research and consultation from a distance. We welcome enquiries concerning particular artists, works, exhibitions or publications and are glad to facilitate access where our holdings may contribute meaningfully to further study. Each enquiry is considered individually.
Writing & Curating
Research acquires its full value only when it can be shared. We regularly contribute to exhibitions, catalogues, scholarly publications and other editorial projects relating to our fields of expertise, and welcome opportunities to collaborate with museums, collections, fellow specialists and publishers.
Our involvement may range from individual catalogue entries and essays to the development of exhibition concepts, the selection of works and broader curatorial guidance. We actively encourage museum loans from our own collection and regularly coordinate loans from the private collections of our clients.
As ambassadors for Belgian art in all its diversity, we consider collaboration with public institutions an important part of our commitment to the study and promotion of our national artistic heritage.
