Deceptive in its apparent simplicity, this plate made from the white clay in Virginal was glazed three times, with the two rows of dots in slip added before different and separate firings. Clearly destined as a decorative object (in the contrast to the utilitarian housewares known from his hand), such fragile decorations were permissible and strongly influenced his reputation as an avant-garde potter.
